The exhibition introduces 55 paintings, graphics and sculptures by many generations of artists, from the generation of artists from the Indochina College of Fine Arts to young artists today. The paintings use a variety of materials such as: lacquer, oil, silk, gouache, watercolor, ink. In addition, there are sculptures made of wood, bronze, plaster, with a rich visual language.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, sculptor Phan Van Tien - Director of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum said: "With the spirit that culture and art are also a front, and artists are soldiers on that front, through the works in its collection, the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum introduces the exhibition to affirm patriotism, national pride, self-respect, the will of independence and self-reliance in each citizen, calling for the support of friends around the world, peace lovers, together speaking up for the just voice to protect Vietnam's territorial sovereignty".
Through this, the artists also recreate for viewers the gentle, poetic beauty of the sea. Life on the sea and islands is depicted realistically and peacefully in many aspects, with images of fishermen clinging to the sea, working hard. In addition, the works also depict the image of brave naval soldiers, determined to maintain the sovereignty of the Fatherland and preserve the beauty of the sea and islands of the homeland.

Previously, there have been more than 10 art exhibitions on the topic of sea and island sovereignty held in the past. However, artist Tran Khanh Chuong - Chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association said that this exhibition has a different meaning from previous exhibitions on current events. If previous exhibitions expressed direct attitudes towards the Haiyang 981 drilling rig violating the sovereignty of our sea and exclusive economic zone, this exhibition shows the perspective of previous artists on the sea and islands.

“The works of different generations of artists, especially those of the previous generations, show that the tradition of patriotism, resistance to foreign invaders and awareness of national sovereignty were clearly affirmed early on. From there, we see that the issue of sea, islands and national sovereignty is not only an issue of yesterday but also of today. The struggle to protect sovereignty is a long-term issue, not only the responsibility of the current generation but also of future generations. Therefore, the works displayed at the exhibition also send us a message of long-term responsibility,” said artist Tran Khanh Chuong.
The exhibition "Maintaining the Fatherland's sea and islands" will last until July 29./.
