Busting a football betting ring worth over 200 billion VND

On May 22, Da Nang City Police said that the Criminal Police Department had just coordinated with relevant units to destroy a gambling ring, organizing gambling in the form ofsoccer bettingover the network scale of more than 200 billion VND.

Accordingly, after a period of establishing a special project, at about 6:00 a.m. on May 21, the Criminal Police Department (Da Nang City Police) coordinated with the Technical Department (Ministry of Public Security) to destroy this network.

Police have urgently arrested Nguyen Tan Cong (36 years old, residing in Hoa Minh ward, Lien Chieu district); Nguyen Thanh Xuan (38 years old) and Dang Ngoc Hieu (34 years old, both residing in Son Tra district) for organizing gambling.

Of the three suspects, Cong was the mastermind. During the search, the police initially seized about 500 pages of documents showing gambling history from April 16 to May 20 with a total amount of more than 40 billion VND.

According to the police, through the investigation, the subjects confessed that from around January 2024 until now, Cong was introduced by an acquaintance in society to a group on the Telegram application to directly contact the bookie to get an account worth 500,000 USD (1 USD bet is conventionally worth 7,000 VND and can be raised up to 25,000 VND).

Then, Cong divided the above account into many small accounts for subordinates and gamblers to organize gambling or gamble in the form of online soccer betting.

The subjects in this ring have a strict division of labor, hierarchy, and organization, and use high-tech means to commit crimes.

Initially, the investigation team determined that the amount of money used to organize and gamble of this line was more than 200 billion VND.
