Preeclampsia usually occurs for the first time during a first pregnancy. However, once a mother has had preeclampsia, she is more likely to experience it again in future pregnancies. Preeclampsia can come on suddenly, so it is important to know the symptoms. Call your midwife or doctor immediately if you notice any of the following warning signs:
- Swelling in the face or puffiness around the eyes, swelling of the hands, feet, ankles that is excessive or sudden.
- Rapid weight gain - more than 4 kg in a week.
- Severe or persistent headache
- Vision changes, double vision, blurred vision, seeing flashing lights, sensitivity to light, or temporary loss of vision
- Severe pain in the upper abdomen
- Nausea and vomiting
Other risk factors include: Having chronic high blood pressure; having certain blood clotting disorders, diabetes, kidney disease, or autoimmune diseases such as lupus; having a close relative (mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, etc.) with preeclampsia; being obese; carrying two or more fetuses; being under 20 or over 40 years old.
