(Baonghean.vn) - Mr. Vu Va Chong (Mong ethnic group) is not only known as a millionaire farmer in the highlands of Huoi Tu but also a pioneer in successfully planting po mu and sa mu trees on this land.

After traveling 30km of steep mountain pass from Muong Xen town (Ky Son), we visited Vu Va Chong's farm in Huoi Tu commune - an altitude of over 1,000m above sea level in the chilly late autumn afternoon. In a small house surrounded by the endless green of tea, sa mu, po mu, ginger, pineapple... the Mong millionaire shared about his entrepreneurial journey.

Mr. Vu Va Chong said: In 2000, the State assigned 10 hectares of hilly land full of reeds, grass, and weeds. At first, the couple only did slash-and-burn farming, barely making enough to eat. Then, during a visit to relatives in Tay Son commune, 40km from home, known as the capital of po mu and sa mu trees, seeing that this type of tree grows quickly, the couple brought back seeds to plant, expanding the area to 3 hectares with 3,000 trees, some of which now have a root diameter of up to 30cm.

In 2003, when the Youth Union 8 brought Shan tea trees to Huoi Tu, Vu Va Chong and his wife took the lead in planting 2.5 hectares. During the care process, they realized that the po mu and sa mu trees not only provided shade but also made the soil loose and prevented soil erosion, so the tea trees grew very well. Therefore, in 2015, he expanded the area of po mu and sa mu trees by 1,000 more trees.

Seeing the effectiveness of planting po mu and sa mu trees in tea gardens from Vu Va Chong's model, many people in the commune came to learn from his experience. Vu Va Chong enthusiastically instructed people on how to plant, care for and reproduce the trees for sale at 15,000 VND/tree. Currently, 50 households in the village have followed his model.

Not only successful with tea, sa mu, po mu, vegetables, pineapple, cassava, elephant grass, ginger... Vu Va Chong also focuses on developing livestock with a herd of 15-17 cows. The comprehensive farm model brings the highland millionaire an income of 150-170 million VND/year, creating regular jobs for 2-4 workers in the area.

After many years of hard work, Vu Va Chong and his wife have now built a solid house and purchased many valuable living facilities. However, what they are most excited about is that their children study hard (both are currently studying at university and college in Hanoi).

Sharing about his future plans, Vu Va Chong said: “I will invest capital to raise more cows, increase the area of planting po mu and sa mu trees, buy an incubator for black chicken eggs to breed for the people. Further, I will invest in building a garden-style tourist area to attract visitors and create jobs for many workers in the commune…”

His farm is also a typical model in developing household economy and building new rural areas in the highlands of Huoi Tu.
