AFP reported that on May 27, North Korea warned that recent "provocative" activities by US soldiers at the Panmunjom truce village on the heavily fortified inter-Korean border could lead to a "catastrophic" military conflict.

The warning was issued by the head of the North Korean garrison in the truce village of Panmunjom.

An unnamed North Korean military official said recent US military activities threatened to destabilize the sensitive region.

The North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted the official as saying that US soldiers had built a steel watchtower for "reconnaissance activities" using sophisticated surveillance equipment.

However, due to the military sensitivity of the Panmunjom area, this official assessed the above move as extremely dangerous.

"The slightest accidental mistake or reprehensible behavior can lead to a catastrophic military conflict," he warned./.
