According to Reuters, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said that North Korea's launch of projectiles early on March 9 was part of an ongoing live-fire exercise, in which Pyongyang used multiple rocket launchers.

The JCS said the North Korean projectiles traveled 200km and reached a maximum altitude of 50km above sea level.

The JCS also said that North Korea is believed to have launched "various types of short-range projectiles."

Earlier, the JSC announced that North Korea on March 9 fired three unidentified objects into the Sea of Japan. The objects were fired in a northeast direction from areas near the eastern town of Sondok in Hamgyong Province.

The South Korean military is monitoring the situation in case of additional launches and maintaining readiness.

On March 2, North Korea also fired two projectiles from a super-large multiple rocket launcher, believed to be part of an artillery drill.

In his 2020 New Year's message, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un announced that the country will soon launch a "new strategic weapon"./.
