The two observation towers, equipped with security cameras and located on the North Korean side of the JSA, were erected following the defection of two North Korean soldiers to the South after killing their commander in October 2012.

The official said the North Korean move appeared to be aimed at strengthening surveillance of the border area. "The goal may be to strengthen surveillance of their areas and better observe our soldiers entering and leaving Panmunjom," he said.

The South Korean military is also considering installing additional observation posts in response to North Korea's actions.

The JSA, where the armistice agreement between the two Koreas was signed in 1953, is considered one of the last front lines of the Cold War. North Korea has also installed similar 20-meter-high steel observation posts here./.
