According to AFP, on August 14, the combined frontline units of the Korean People's Army (KPA) threatened to retaliate against South Korea after a series of anti-Pyongyang leaflets were dropped across the border.

“The puppet forces should not forget that even in a moment, the whole of South Korea can be turned into a sea of fire by reckless leaflet scattering. The patience of the KPA soldiers is limited,” the Yonhap news agency quoted a statement from the units as saying.

The statement recalled the July 24 balloon-borne anti-Pyongyang leaflets and the incidents in Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces last month. A South Korean activist group also said it carried out another attack on Aug. 14.

The North Korean military also accused South Korean activists of carrying out leafleting operations “with the tacit connivance of the South Korean regime and military,” warning that with such large-scale psychological warfare operations, the two Koreas “have essentially entered a state of war.”

In a related development on the same day, South Korean police prevented activists from spreading anti-North Korea leaflets across the heavily fortified border area.

About 100 police officers set up barricades to block vehicles carrying about 30 activists to the border town of Paju, preventing them from carrying out a plan to launch balloons carrying leaflets into North Korea.
