North Korea holds memorial service for late leader Kim Jong Il
On December 17, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea commemorated the death of late leader Kim Jong Il one year ago.
Hundreds of thousands of North Korean soldiers and civilians gathered outside the Kumsusan Memorial Palace in the capital Pyongyang, observing a minute of silence for the late leader.

At the rally, Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of North Korea Kim Yong Nam praised the contributions of the late leader Kim Jong Il in turning North Korea into a military power.
Director of the General Political Bureau of the Korean People's Army Choe Ryong Hae affirmed that the North Korean armed forces will fulfill their duties and roles as the army of the Leader and the army of the Party.
