AFP reported that on July 20, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said that the country had posthumously awarded late leader Kim Jong-Il a new medal as Pyongyang prepared to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

According to KCNA, the presidium of the North Korean parliament approved the awarding of the medal to Kim Jong-Il, who died in December 2011, on June 10.

KCNA did not name the medal, but said only: “Kim Jong-Il is... the peerless patriot who crushed the reactionaries' moves to isolate and suffocate the DPRK with the Songun (military first) power.”

KCNA added that the military-first policy had provided "a mighty treasured sword for defending the country and waging the anti-imperialist struggle."

Mr. Kim Jong-Il received many of North Korea's highest medals and titles./.
