(Baonghean.vn) - On highland areas, previously growing cassava and sugarcane was ineffective, in recent years, farmers in Anh Son district have switched to growing shallots with an income of over 200 million VND/ha.

Đỉnh Sơn là địa phương hình thành vùng chuyên canh trồng hành tăm với diện tích 25 ha, tập trung nhiều ở các thôn 19/5; 323; tháng Tám.
Dinh Son is a locality that has formed a specialized area for growing shallots with an area of 25 hectares, concentrated in villages 19/5, Thang Tam, and 323.

For the past 5 years, Ms. Thai Thi Yen's family in village 19/5, Dinh Son commune has converted nearly 2 sao of hillside land from growing low-yielding sugarcane and cassava to growing shallots.

Ms. Yen said: Shallots are easy to grow, have few pests and diseases, are drought-resistant, and are especially suitable for high-altitude soil. The crop season begins in August every year and is harvested in February of the following year. On an area of nearly 2 sao of shallots, last year her family harvested 600 kg, after deducting expenses, earning more than 15 million VND/crop. With her experience, Ms. Yen believes that this year if the weather is stable, her family's 2 sao of shallots will continue to yield high income.

Shallots have brought stable income to many families in village 19/5, Dinh Son commune.

This year, Ms. Bui Thi Ly's family in village 19/5 planted nearly 1 sao of chives. This is also the 10th year that chives have been attached to her family's land.

Ms. Ly said that from August every year, households start plowing the land, cleaning the grass, making high beds for quick drainage, using a rake to make furrows to sow onions in even rows. After sowing, cover with straw and corn to keep the plants moist for growth and create loose soil for large, beautiful bulbs. Thanks to good care and proper application of technical processes, her family's shallots have a high yield of 5 quintals/sao every year, with large, beautiful white bulbs, selling for 40,000 VND/kg, earning her 20 million VND. In addition to selling onion bulbs, she also trims onions to sell plants, at 2,000 VND/bunch, creating conditions for the onion plants to grow and increasing income.

Ngoài trồng hành tăm bán củ, nhiều hộ dân còn bán hành cây với giá 2.000 đồng/bó.
In addition to growing chives to sell bulbs, many households also sell green onions for 2,000 VND/bunch.

For a long time, Dinh Son has been a locality specializing in growing shallots in Anh Son district with an area of 25 hectares, concentrated in villages 19/5; 323; Thang Tam. In village 19/5 alone, nearly 100% of households grow shallots, with the smallest households growing one sao, and the largest households growing 5-7 sao.

In recent years, people have also grown shallots intercropped with orange trees to supply markets in and outside the province, with an average income of over 200 million VND per hectare. This year, despite unfavorable weather conditions and prolonged heavy rains at the beginning of the season, thanks to extensive experience in shallot production, the crop has generally grown well. Realizing that this is a crop with low investment costs, few pests and diseases, drought-resistant, and very beneficial to farmers, Dinh Son commune is encouraging people to grow shallots to increase income per unit area.
