(Baonghean.vn) - In Nghia Dan, the lemon growing model of Mr. Tran Quoc Viet's family in Hamlet 2, Nghia Duc Commune is proving effective, bringing in an income of over 200 million VND/year.

With more than 1.2 hectares of laterite land, previously the entire area was used by his family to grow sugarcane, but the efficiency was not high. In 2012, taking advantage of the existing land fund, Mr. Viet researched and read in books and newspapers, discovered the prickly lime variety originating from Nam Dan with the special ability to be suitable for nutrient-poor soil and give high yield, his family began to buy seedlings, planting nearly 600 trees on the entire area of laterite land of the family.

In the early days of planting the lemon tree, his family was worried because of the large area of lemon trees, but with the attention and encouragement of the Party Committee and the government of Nghia Duc commune, and learning from experience, he realized that this is an easy-to-grow, easy-to-care-for and especially adaptable variety.

Mr. Tran Quoc Viet shared: After about 6-9 months of planting, the lemon tree has produced several hundred flowers and many fruits on the tree. However, the tree is still small and not strong enough to grow, so it is necessary to remove some fruits to help the tree grow faster. Plant lemon trees to harvest fruit in the 6th and 7th lunar months. Pruning leaves in the 2nd and 8th lunar months is very reasonable, it does not affect the flowers and fruit but also stimulates flowering and tree growth.

In the first year, the family's lemon garden yielded over 8 tons/ha, and the trees continued to yield high yields in the following years, reaching 15 to 20 tons, with prices ranging from 8,000 VND - 25,000 VND/kg, earning 150 - 200 million VND. After harvesting the first crop, the next crop will be harvested every 15 - 20 days. However, to achieve the highest yield, lemon growers need to provide adequate fertilization and spray pesticides regularly on the trees.

This is the fourth year that his family’s nearly 600 lime trees have been harvested and have brought high efficiency. This August alone, his family will sell about 10 tons of fresh fruit to the market, earning an income of 100 million VND. Currently, new fruit crops have also begun to be harvested.

After producing products, traders in areas such as Thai Hoa, Quy Hop, Quy Chau, Vinh, etc. came to the garden to buy the thorny lemon trees. Currently, Mr. Viet's family not only has a high income from selling lemons but also provides seedlings for a number of other farming households in the commune and neighboring communes. At the same time, he always guides and shares experiences in growing thorny lemons with farmers.

It is known that up to now, dozens of other farming households in Nghia Duc commune have begun to convert their model from growing ineffective short-term agricultural crops to growing large quantities of prickly lemon trees, in order to gradually build concentrated growing areas, better meeting the needs of the product consumption market.

Mr. Bach Hung Nam, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nghia Duc Commune, said: "The lime tree is very suitable for the soil in this area, however, the area where people grow it is still fragmented. In the near future, we will organize for farmers to learn from the model of Mr. Viet's family."
