Growing ginger under the forest canopy
(Baonghean)In 2010, with the support of Nghe An Province Agricultural Extension Center, Ky Son District Agricultural Extension Station coordinated with local authorities to build a model of "Ginger planting under forest canopy", in Na Ngoi commune, the model was deployed in the spring crop of 2012, with a scale of 1 hectare.
The objective of the model: Intercropping short-term crops with long-term crops both limits erosion and increases income for people. On the other hand, the process of caring for short-term crops creates favorable conditions for long-term crops to grow well.
First, the vegetation is cleared, the vegetation is cleared, chopped into small pieces to be used as mulch after planting, limiting erosion and leaching. The soil is prepared in strips, between the rows of main crops along the contour lines. Small hoeing is done 25 - 30cm deep, then rows are made, the rows are made 15 - 20cm deep (rows are 30 - 35cm apart, clumps are 25 - 30cm apart). The clumps between the upper rows are arranged in a crocodile tooth shape (tripod). In places with complex terrain, the soil is prepared in holes (50 x 50 x 25 cm), using a small hoe to mound the soil 5 - 7 cm high. The amount of fertilizer is calculated for 1 hectare (10 tons of decomposed manure + 400 kg of lime powder + 110 - 130 kg of urea + 400 kg of super orchid + 200 - 250 kg of potassium). Apply all lime powder when preparing the soil, apply all manure and 1/2 amount of inorganic fertilizer when planting, apply in rows and then cover with a thin layer of soil to cover the fertilizer to avoid the seeds coming into contact with the fertilizer. When planting, place the ginger sample at a depth of 3-4 cm so that the sprouts face up, then cover the ginger with fine soil, press firmly with your hands and then cover with soil.
If planting in holes, place 3 cuttings in each hole in a triangle shape (cuttings 20 cm apart). After planting, use compost such as chopped ground cover, straw, rice husks... a thin layer to retain moisture and increase looseness. After 2 months of planting, weed and mound the base, after about 5 months, apply all remaining inorganic fertilizer; spread fertilizer evenly around and 5-7 cm from the base and combine with mounding the base.
