Mr. Phan Van Sy's family in hamlet 5 has more than 2 sao of garden land and specialized land in Con field. For more than 10 years, his family has converted the entire area to grow squash. Mr. Sy said: Growing squash allows you to take the initiative in the source of seeds and is suitable for fields without water.

The time to plant squash starts in January, and the peak harvest is in the 4th and 5th lunar months. Squash is harvested continuously for 2-3 months. Each squash crop, his family harvests about 1 ton of fruit. According to the current market price, squash is sold for 5-6 thousand VND/kg, after deducting costs, the profit is 6 million VND/sao/crop.

According to households that have grown aromatic squash for many years, this crop has few pests and diseases. Only during the fruit-bearing stage is the squash often damaged by fruit flies. If not treated, the squash will become small and crooked. With many years of experience growing aromatic squash, people have drawn conclusions and passed on to each other the experience of using very effective fruit fly bait. When the squash is ready to bear fruit, just soak a small cotton ball with fly bait and hang it in a paper box or plastic can in a shady place. Hang 7-8 baits per pole to completely kill harmful flies. With this method of preventing diseases on squash, you will harvest beautiful, slender, long squash. Mr. Tran Van Tai - Head of Hamlet 5, Dai Thanh said: The whole hamlet has about 2 hectares of winter melon. This crop is both low-cost and low-maintenance, and the price of winter melon is usually stable at 5-6 thousand VND/kg. In general, the income from this crop is 4-5 times higher than that from rice cultivation.

The whole Dai Thanh commune has dozens of households growing squash, with over 10 hectares.

Currently, Dai Thanh commune has about 10 hectares of squash grown in home gardens and field gardens on specialized land, with dozens of households participating. This is one of the vegetable crops with very high economic efficiency. Mr. Vuong Kim Su - Chairman of Dai Thanh Commune People's Committee, Yen Thanh said: In the annual production plan, we identify this as one of the main crops in the locality.

The commune will coordinate with sectors and units to organize training, transfer science and technology, and find stable output for people. From home garden models, we have mobilized and encouraged people to expand to field gardens such as in hamlet 5, hamlet 1, hamlet 3...; moving towards building a squash model on 2-rice land, increasing the area from 15 - 20 hectares, diversifying the types of crops to contribute to shifting the economic structure, increasing income for farmers.
