The world's top movie stars gathered on the red carpet at the Kodak Theater (or Hollywood & Highland Center) in Los Angeles to attend the 84th Academy Awards - the awards ceremony of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

As of 8:20 a.m. Vietnam time (8:20 p.m. US time), while most of the stars had gathered, no one had seen director Woody Allen, who was nominated in two categories: Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for the film "Midnight in Paris."

Allen has received a total of 23 nominations and has won three awards. However, Allen has only ever attended one award ceremony, in 2002.

Aside from Allen, Hollywood's golden couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were not present. Pitt is nominated for Best Actor for "Money Ball," while Jolie is scheduled to present an award.

According to statistics, about 4 million viewers worldwide will watch this event on television, with the host talent of comedian Billy Crystal.

The two most notable films will still be Martin Scorsese's 3D film "Hugo" and the French black-and-white silent film "The Artist" with 11 and 10 nominations respectively.

Just one day before the awards ceremony, "The Artist" won another important "Pre-Oscar" victory when it won the Independent Spirit awards.

Actors attending the awards ceremony include last year's Best Actor and Best Actress winners Colin Firth and Natalie Portman, along with a star-studded cast including Tom Cruise, Penelope Cruz, Tom Hanks and Angelina Jolie...
