Pentagon spokesman Steve Warren said at a news briefing that the coalition killed Abu Salah, who was described as IS's "finance minister," in late November.
"He is one of the most senior and experienced members of the IS financial network, he was a member of al-Qaeda," Warren said.
Mr Warren said Salah was the third senior member of IS's financial network to be killed. "Killing him and his predecessors will deprive IS of the knowledge and talent needed to coordinate the organisation's financial operations," the spokesman added.
According to a report by the Brookings Institution, Abu Salah's real name is Muafaq Mustafa Mohammed al-Karmoush.
Warren announced that a senior leader in charge of IS extortion operations and one responsible for administration were also eliminated.
The US calls IS the richest militant group in history. They make money by selling oil, taxing, kidnapping for ransom and selling looted antiquities.
