"I nominate Christopher A. Wray, a man of impeccable qualifications, to be the new director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)," USA Today quoted US President Donald Trump writing on Twitter.

In a statement released hours after posting the message on Twitter, Mr. Trump said Wray "will once again serve our country as a strong defender of the law and a model of integrity when the Senate confirms his nomination to head the FBI."

The FBI director's job has been vacant since Trump fired James Comey from the post nearly a month ago, raising questions about whether the president is trying to undermine the FBI's investigation into Russian collusion with the Trump campaign to interfere in the 2016 election.

Wray served as head of the Justice Department's Criminal Division from 2003 to 2005. He is also the personal attorney for New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a close ally of Mr. Trump. In response to the President's introduction, Wray emphasized that he "looks forward to serving the American people with integrity."
