Speaking in Manchester, New Hampshire, Mr. Trump said that if elected President, he would use executive power to better control immigrants - a main theme of his campaign in the general election on November 8.

"I will use this authority to protect the American people," he said. "When I am elected, I will suspend immigration from areas of the world that have a history of terrorism against the United States, Europe or our allies until we have learned how to end these threats." Mr. Trump noted that Omar Mateen, the perpetrator of the Orlando massacre, had parents born in Afghanistan.

Mr Trump also criticized his Democratic rival, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, for her support of accepting Syrian refugees, and questioned President Barack Obama's motives for refusing to use the term "radical Islamic terrorism" to describe such attacks. He said that neither the current president nor Mrs Clinton were fit to lead the country.
