"Germany needs to spend more money. Spain, France too. What they do to the US is unfair,"Reutersquoted US President Donald Trump speaking, just two weeks before the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit.

NATO members have agreed to spend 2% of their GDP on defense each year by 2024, but Germany and Spain are among those struggling to meet the target. France plans to increase its military spending by 30% to meet the NATO target.

Last month, Trump warned that countries that do not contribute enough to NATO "will be dealt with", with Germany reportedly failing to live up to its responsibilities.

Accordingly, the new law prohibits foreign interference in domestic affairs and criminalizes those who sabotage Australia's economic relations with other countries.

According to the New York Times, this new law has many similar provisions, but has a larger scope of application, compared to the counterintelligence laws passed in the UK and the US after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
