China: 58 dead, 175 missing due to floods

About 13,400 houses collapsed, 3.47 million people were affected and 300,000 people were evacuated.

A total of 58 people were killed and 175 others were missing after heavy rains caused floods and landslides in Sichuan Province, southwest China last week, local authorities announced on July 16.

At least 44 people were killed and 117 missing after a landslide in a village in Dujiangyan City, according to an initial investigation by the Sichuan Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

From July 7 to 12, storms and rains affected many areas of Sichuan Province, including Deyang and Dujiangyan, where the cumulative rainfall was 400mm - 800mm. In some areas of these two cities, the rainfall was up to 800mm - 1,151mm.

About 13,400 houses collapsed, 3.47 million people were affected and 300,000 people were evacuated.

Provincial and local governments have just allocated a total of 230 million yuan for relief activities in disaster-affected areas, providing about 4,000 tents, 30,000 quilts, and a lot of clothes and food for flood victims./.
