A total of 572 Chinese officials have been punished in the first round of inspections by central authorities as part of a nationwide crackdown on gang crime, according to Xinhua.
Ten inspection teams have been sent to 10 provincial-level regions in China to conduct a month-long inspection, the source said.
According to statistics from the inspection steering group office, during the inspection, a total of 1,791 corruption cases related to gang and organized crime as well as "protection umbrellas" for such crimes were investigated.
Also during this inspection, 96 gangs were dismantled in 10 inspection areas, and assets worth 5 billion yuan (about 726 million USD) related to gang crimes were sealed or seized.
According to the plan, the second and third inspections will be conducted next year to ensure inspections of all provincial-level regions of China./.
