Xinhua News Agency reported that two vertical maps, “Topography of China” and “Map of the People’s Republic of China”, drawn by the Hunan Provincial Map Publishing House, have been approved and officially published by the National Survey and Geoinformation Administration of China.

“Map of the People’s Republic of China” is the first large vertical map published by this country, brazenly putting almost all the sea and island areas in the East Sea within the scope of the so-called “sovereignty” claimed by Beijing, seriously violating the sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction of the countries bordering the East Sea, including Vietnam.

This is the first map of China to show its sea and island areas in proportion to mainland areas, instead of showing them as a square in the lower right corner of a horizontal map as before.

Vietnam as well as the international community have repeatedly affirmed that China's nine-dash line claim, also known as the "cow tongue line" in the East Sea, has absolutely no legal basis and is contrary to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, of which China is a member.

This claim violates the exclusive economic zones and continental shelves of many countries in the region, including Vietnam, and has been protested by many countries. China's efforts to implement this claim are in fact increasing tensions in the region.

Through historical evidence of establishing sovereignty, the Vietnamese State always affirms Vietnam's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos and considers China's "nine-dash line" shown on the diagram to be invalid because it has no legal, historical and practical basis.

Vietnam has also repeatedly requested China to immediately stop actions that cause tension and complicate the situation in the East Sea, affecting the maintenance of peace, stability and cooperation in the region. Vietnam believes that relevant parties need to comply with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and should not take actions that further complicate the situation, contributing to the maintenance of peace, stability and cooperation in the region./.
