Hong Kong Chief Executive announces no resignation

According to Xinhua News Agency, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (China), Mr. Leung Chun-ying (C. Y Leung) announced on the evening of October 2 that he would not resign and had appointed Chief of Staff Carrie Lam to represent the government in dialogue with students participating in the "Occupy Central" movement.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (China), Mr. Leung Chun-ying (C. Y Leung) announced on the evening of October 2 that he would not resign and had appointed Chief of Staff Carrie Lam to represent the government in dialogue with students participating in the "Occupy Central" movement.

The statement was made by Leung Chun-ying at a joint press conference with Carrie Lam at the Hong Kong government headquarters minutes before the deadline for student protesters to demand Leung Chun-ying's resignation.

At the press conference, Leung Chun-ying emphasized that he will not resign and will continue to work to promote Hong Kong's electoral reform with the goal of conducting universal suffrage to choose the next leader of the special administrative region in 2017.

The leader also stressed that the government and police forces of the special administrative region have been very patient over the past five days.

Previously, students participating in the “Occupy Central” movement sent an open letter requesting to meet Chief Executive Carrie Lam on the evening of October 2.

Leung Chun-ying said the Hong Kong government has studied the letter carefully, while Carrie Lam expressed her desire to contact the students as soon as possible to arrange a meeting. However, the Hong Kong government has not yet given a specific time for the meeting with the protesting students./.
