Syrian university shelled, 15 students killed

A mortar attack on Syria's Damascus University killed at least 15 students and seriously injured six others on March 28, Syria's official news agency SANA reported.

SANA quoted Damascus University Rector Amer Mardini as condemning "the mortar attack carried out by terrorists on the university's Faculty of Architecture."

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) also confirmed the attack. The organization said that there were many security facilities near the Faculty of Architecture of Damascus University.

Meanwhile, witnesses said some shells were also fired into the river near two hotels in Damascus, one shell hit a mosque in central Damascus, but caused no casualties.

Over the past week, Syrian rebels have stepped up artillery attacks in central Damascus, mainly in the Umayyad Square area in the center of the capital, where the state television headquarters is located./.
