Established in September 1971, Dien Tan Secondary School has gone through many historical stages. During the fierce war when the US imperialists bombed the North, Dien Tan Secondary School was the focal point of railway traffic and the 9-pillar bridge, which was frequently bombed. Overcoming bombs and bullets, the school's board of directors still maintained teaching and learning activities by dividing classes, dividing rooms, setting up simple thatched huts in semi-submerged and semi-surfaced areas in neighboring communes; organizing night classes... At that time, the school's facilities were also extremely difficult, with only 8 classrooms built in the style of level 4 thatched-roof houses. In 1979, the school added 8 more classrooms and from the 1992-1996 school year, the school merged with Dien Thinh Commune Secondary School, taking the name Dien Thinh Secondary School. In the 1996-1997 school year, Dien Thinh Secondary School was divided into 2 schools: Dien Tan Secondary School and Dien Thinh Secondary School. Since then, Dien Tan Secondary School was re-established according to Decision No. 2998/QD/UB dated August 22, 1996 of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee with the name Dien Tan Secondary School.

After more than 50 years of striving and growing up, many generations of teachers and students of Dien Tan Secondary School have contributed to a long list of achievements. In particular, in the new period, from the 2012-2013 school year to now, responding to the "Two Nos" campaign of the Ministry of Education and Training, the school has focused on overcoming the disease of achievements in education, maintaining indicators of two-sided education quality, maintaining the number of students, and preventing students from dropping out of school. The school invests and focuses on three main areas: improving the quality of education; investing in building facilities and teaching and learning equipment; and creating a green - clean - beautiful environment. Accordingly, to improve the quality of education, the school focuses on rectifying discipline and promoting improvements in teaching methods, innovating testing and evaluation, focusing on regular training to improve teaching capacity, style, and professional ethics for staff and teachers.

Every year, the school always directs and implements other educational activities well such as: Vocational education, extracurricular education, life skills education for students with many forms of combining curricular and extracurricular activities, during and after school hours. Focus on nurturing excellent students, tutoring weak students in all grades and especially in Math, Literature, and English right from the beginning of the school year. At the same time, many emulation movements are launched among teachers and students, thanks to which, the quality of students has improved significantly, students with good and fair ethics are high, accounting for over 90%. From a unit in the early stages with annual educational quality classified as "district lowlands", low general quality, and a high percentage of weak students. With a high spirit of solidarity, with the determination to constantly innovate to build up to standards. In the past 3 school years, the school has continuously had many excellent students at the district and provincial levels. Specifically, there were 88 excellent students at the district level and 6 excellent students at the provincial level. In particular, in the 2013-2014 school year, the school had 3 excellent students at the provincial level, notably Hoang Thi Tam, who was the valedictorian of the province in Literature, adding to the school's traditional golden board.

Regarding management staff, 1 principal, 2 vice principals, all 3 comrades have met the standards according to regulations. During the leadership and management process, the democratic regulations in the agency have been well implemented, always proactive, dynamic, creative, daring to think, daring to do, willing to learn and have been classified as good by the direct education management level, for many years achieving the title of Emulation Fighter at the grassroots level. With a total of 39 teachers in the school, 100% of teachers have met the standard and above standard qualifications, of which 34/39 teachers have met the standard, reaching a rate of 87.2%; 22/39 teachers are excellent at all levels, reaching a rate of 56.41% (of which 4 teachers are excellent teachers at the provincial level). 100% of teachers are classified according to professional standards with a good grade or higher. Accounting, clerical, library, equipment, medical and security staff ensure the school's operational requirements.

From a unit with difficulties in facilities, thanks to the attention of all levels and sectors, the school has now become spacious and up to standard: The school has a separate campus, surrounded by a fence, with an area of ​​9,683 m2, an average of 20.5 m2/student, the structure of the school's buildings is arranged reasonably, scientifically, cleanly and airy. In which, the classroom area has 16 rooms. The subject classroom area includes: Physics - Technology room, Biology - Chemistry room with full facilities and standard laboratory equipment, 1 computer room with 20 computers connected to the Internet, a library recognized as meeting national standards. There are traditional rooms, music rooms, medical rooms and working rooms for organizations and unions and fully equipped according to regulations. Full playgrounds, sports training grounds, parking lots for staff, teachers and students; has a clean water system, sanitation facilities ensure according to regulations. In the 2014-2015 school year, the school won first prize in the district in the contest "Beautiful Secondary School", with 96.25 points.

Mr. Thai Doan Trang, Principal of the school shared: Determining the construction of a national standard school is one of the important tasks aimed at standardization, modernization, and socialization to build conditions to ensure the improvement of education quality; gradually affirming the school's brand in the educational process.
