Bac Yen Thanh High School is located in a poor but traditional land of studiousness in the north of Yen Thanh district; it is the hometown of the first-ranking mandarin of Nghe An province, Bach Lieu, from Thanh Da village (now Ma Thanh commune) and is famous for his three generations of grandfathers, fathers, and grandchildren who all passed the mandarin examinations during the Tran dynasty: "A family of three mandarins sat/ A mother's mirror for many generations to look at", they are the mandarins Ho Tong Thoc, Ho Tong Don, and Ho Tong Thanh in Ke Cuoi (now Tho Thanh commune).
