Over the past half century, the school named after the country's outstanding revolutionary has left its mark on many proud achievements in the tradition of good teaching and good learning, one of the "bright spots" of the province's education and the "cradle" that nurtures the talents of Nghe An's learning land.

Phan Dang Luu High School, formerly Yen Thanh High School - the first high school in the rice district, was established in September 1961, on Trang Thanh land. In the early days of the school, there were only 3 8th grade classes with about 150 students and 7 teachers, teacher Hoang Xuan Dinh was the first principal of the school.

At that time, parents and students spent a lot of effort carrying rocks, carrying sand, digging soil to build the school. Two years later, the new school was more spacious, with 8 tiled classrooms built. The school was renamed Yen Thanh 1 High School in 1965. During the war against America, the school had to evacuate twice. Teachers and students of the school experienced many hardships but were always filled with love and respect; teaching and learning were always disciplined and of high quality.

Over the past 55 years, under the roof of Phan Dang Luu High School, thousands of students have succeeded and become famous, contributing to building their homeland and country.

After the war, teachers and students returned to their old school and continued the emulation movement of good teaching and good learning. In the 1974-1975 school year, the school began a period of prosperity and advancement in the education system of the province. In the 1984-1985 school year, the school was honored to be named after revolutionary Phan Dang Luu. At this time, the teaching and learning movement and school activities were increasingly focused on and promoted, going into depth.

Generations of school teachers, the “ferrymen” who are passionate and devoted to the cause of educating people such as: Mr. Hoang Xuan Dinh, Chu Van Tan, Phan Dinh Thuc, Nguyen Hoang, Phan Ngoc Diem, Nguyen Trong Hung, Bui Van Hung… have contributed to promoting and improving the quality of education of the school to develop more and more strongly; rising to become one of the top high schools in the province in recent years.

Thanks to that, for many years, Phan Dang Luu High School has been consistently among the top high schools in the province with a high rate of excellent students and university entrance exams, with many students achieving top scores in university entrance exams. Over 70% of the school's students pass university entrance exams each year, with 100% of the selective classes passing.

In the past 5 years, the number of students classified as good and excellent increased from 55% to 72% in 2016. Phan Dang Luu High School has become a place to train talents for Nghe An. The reputation of the school's students who have achieved high results in provincial competitions for excellent students is increasingly growing.

In the past 5 years, there have been 126 excellent students at the provincial level in all subjects, including 5 first prizes, 30 second prizes, 37 third prizes with many outstanding faces such as: Pham Hung Vuong, first prize in Math grade 12, Tran Thi Minh Nguyet, first prize in Math grade 12, Nguyen Dinh Tuan, first prize in Biology grade 12, Tran Anh Tu, first prize in Math grade 12, Nguyen Nghia, second prize in Chemistry grade 12...

In the 2015-2016 school year, the school's excellent students ranked 6th in the province, ranked first in the province and third in the country in the science and technology innovation contest, ranked third in the country in the English math contest, and ranked first or second in the province in the IOE English contest. In 2013-2014, the IOE contest had 1 third prize and this year, 4 national encouragement prizes.
