On July 8, Iran's Atomic Energy Organization spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said Tehran had enriched uranium beyond the threshold set in the 2015 deal with world powers. Spokesman Kamalvandi said Iran could enrich uranium even higher than 20%, but insisted the country would not pursue that solution just to "threaten other countries." Tehran warned it could restart a series of centrifuges, the third step in reducing its commitment to the nuclear deal.

The nuclear deal, signed by Iran with major powers including the US, UK, Germany, France, Russia, EU and China in 2015, in which Tehran accepted significant restrictions on its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief and oil sales abroad. Accordingly, Iran's uranium enrichment is limited to a maximum of 3.67%, just enough to produce energy and much lower than the over 90% level needed to make nuclear weapons.

"We need to find out what happened. Those responsible for this action will face very serious consequences," British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said on July 8, referring to the leak of diplomatic cables sent to London by British Ambassador to the US Kim Darroch, in which he criticized US President Donald Trump as "unskilled, uncertain and incompetent".

A spokesman for British Prime Minister Theresa May said the leak was unacceptable and that an investigation was underway.

The leaked contents were first revealed by the UK's Daily Mail. The newspaper said Darroch's notes, which spanned from 2017 to the present, included assessments of Trump's foreign policy and 2020 re-election plans. The British ambassador also reportedly wrote that "the infighting and chaos in the White House is mostly true," although the US president firmly denied it and called it "fake news." Mr. Darroch also seemed to doubt the possibility of the US government "becoming more normal, less complicated, less unpredictable and less divided."

The German government said on July 8 that it has no plans to send ground troops to Syria, rejecting a US request for the European country to increase its military involvement in the fight against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).

German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said the German government intends to continue implementing current measures within the framework of the international coalition against IS, which means no ground troops will be sent. Mr. Seibert stressed that Germany has made significant and internationally recognized contributions to the fight against IS over the years.

In a statement on July 8, military spokesman in the northern region of Afghanistan, Abdul Hadi Jamal, said that these security personnel were mostly police officers, who were captured by the Taliban in Qush Tepa district. This is the second group of Afghan security personnel released by the Taliban in Jawzjan province in the past week. Previously, the extremist Islamic group also released 42 security personnel, a week after occupying Qush Tepa district and capturing 90 security personnel stationed there.

The release of the captured Taliban security personnel comes as representatives of the extremist Islamic group are holding talks with Afghan political factions in Qatar.
