Titled "Vietnam, the Dirty War," the film begins with the events of February 21, 1970, the start of secret negotiations at a villa in Choisy-le-Roi on the outskirts of the French capital Paris.
In the midst of the fierce war in Vietnam, French President Georges Pompidou agreed to organize a meeting in France between US President Richard Nixon's special advisor, Mr. Henry Kissinger, and the special advisor of the delegation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, Mr. Le Duc Tho.
The US - supporting the South Vietnamese government and the North Vietnamese revolutionary government - tried to find a way out of the conflict.
Within 3 years, people on both sides met at 45 meetings leading to the signing of the Paris Agreement in January 1973. However, it was not until 2 years later that the war ended with the collapse of the Saigon puppet government on April 30, 1975.
After 40 years, Arte channel has dedicated the "Thema" column to this war. The second topic called "The Vietnam War, the center of secret negotiations" was carried out by Arte with the focus on this historic meeting, many details of which were not even known.
Thanks to the recordings from that time and illustrated with a simple narration, the filmmakers let the audience feel the tense yet elegant atmosphere of the meeting between the American and Vietnamese special envoys.
Through documents, many of which are rare, filmmaker Daniel Roussel has relived the difficult moments with the presence and sharing of a number of witnesses, in which Mr. Henry Kissinger expressed his views along with members of the Vietnamese negotiation delegation.
This brand new documentary (which won an award at the Pessac Historical Film Festival) gives audiences a better understanding of the diplomatic "battles of wits" between two famous figures: Henry Kissinger, a Harvard University professor, and Le Duc Tho, a revolutionary soldier who was imprisoned and tortured by the French colonialists and one of the key leaders of the Vietnamese revolution.
