Some Chinese state media have been instructed to adopt a softer stance and refrain from using “aggressive language” toward US President Donald Trump, the South China Morning Post reported.

Despite rising trade tensions as both sides impose new import tariffs on each other's goods, both the US and China intend to maintain restraint and avoid insulting or criticizing the other country's leaders, the newspaper said.

"We were instructed not to use harsh language towards Mr. Trump," the source said. The directive clearly stated that we should avoid using harsh and vulgar words about Mr. Trump, as well as not turning the current situation into a "war of insults."

Despite its criticism of trade policy, Chinese media did not blame Trump or any particular US official for the current situation. According to the newspaper, such a move can be seen as an attempt to avoid a hostile reaction from Trump and further complications in the current situation.
