Children will be traumatized.
Recently, a mother in a northern city discovered that her 12-year-old son had stolen 500,000 VND from his grandfather to buy toys and play video games. In a fit of rage, the mother whipped her son’s buttocks and forced him to walk naked on the street where many people were passing by. The mother also said that she wanted her son to feel ashamed and stop stealing.
Discussing this method of education, Dr. Vu Thu Huong, lecturer at Hanoi National University of Education, said that this is not a method of educating children but an act of child abuse. Is social media spreading the news and the press getting involved in reporting it a way to "defend" children or is it harmful to them?
Dr. Huong was quite upset when she said, “There is no reason that can justify the mother in this case. She gave birth to the child but she has no right to humiliate the child for this reason. No matter who gives birth, everyone has the right to be respected. I am extremely upset with the thought that if you want the best for your child, you can abuse him or her in any way you want.”
In addition, according to Dr. Huong, from the perspective of sex education, this mother's actions can also be considered child abuse.
With the way this mother punished her, Dr. Huong believes that the child will definitely suffer psychological trauma. Because according to Dr. Huong, sometimes just a word or an action can leave behind consequences, let alone a terrible action like this. Reality has proven that many children have committed suicide just because of small conflicts with friends or friends insulting them. This incident is too serious, the child's injuries will be very great, the child will feel inferior to friends, lack confidence and may even feel humiliated.
Children who take money from their parents are learning ownership.
According to Dr. Huong, the act of children taking money from their parents is learning about ownership. Parents need to teach their children about the law so that they understand and do not violate it. There have been many children who took money from their parents, but when they were carefully educated, they knew and avoided this violation.
“I have taught many parents how to handle this situation as follows: Let your children understand the feelings of the person who lost money, the difficulties they have when losing money. When they understand, they will also know the consequences of their actions and know they were wrong,” said Dr. Huong.
In addition, according to Dr. Huong, parents also need to let their children know about the laws that punish those who steal other people's property.
“Sometimes, if necessary, we can let the children listen to Buddhist teachings from eminent monks. Many children have understood and changed after listening to the teachings,” Dr. Huong emphasized.
Dr. Huong also shared that she had encountered many cases of children stealing other people's money. Usually, when the children witnessed someone struggling because of losing money, they understood and felt very regretful. There were also children who were used to it, and when the police officers explained the law, they were very scared, remembered and changed. Especially when the children listened to the Buddhist teachings, their attitude was very apologetic and regretful. This is a good sign and it is clear that the children did not repeat the offense afterwards.
Answering the question of whether the press should publish such news, Dr. Huong said that there should be a sanction for publishing news related to children. The way newspapers publish news can make children feel more ashamed and humiliated. Therefore, if we absolutely have to publish it, it is best not to publish the character's image. We need to show more respect for children.
