Protect your health from pesticides

Using industrial wastewater to water vegetables, using pesticides and growth stimulants indiscriminately, in the wrong dosage, and at the wrong time has caused the amount of residual pesticides in green vegetables to far exceed the allowable standards, seriously affecting the health of consumers.

The harmful effects of pesticides on health

Pesticides are chemicals produced by humans to kill pests and weeds that are harmful to crops. Pesticides are divided into two main types: insecticides and herbicides. These drugs have the advantage of killing pests and weeds quickly, and are easy to use, so they are favored by farmers. However, pesticides are all highly toxic. During the use of pesticides, a certain amount of pesticides can enter the tree trunk, fruit, or stick tightly to the leaves and fruit. People and animals who eat these agricultural products can be poisoned immediately to death, or mildly poisoned, slowly causing serious health effects. Due to limited knowledge, some farmers do not fully comply with regulations on the use and storage of pesticides. Some people store pesticides in cupboards or wardrobes, causing cases of poisoning, even tragic deaths due to mistakenly eating pesticides.

Numerous studies have linked pesticides and growth hormones to health problems such as cancer, ADHD, and neurological disorders; in particular, high exposure can weaken the immune system. Some doctors also warn that children's brain growth can be damaged by pesticides in food.

Protect yourself

All fresh fruits and vegetables, whether or not they have been sprayed with pesticides during the growing process, should be washed under running water to remove dirt and harmful bacteria – that is the advice of food safety experts. However, tests show that some pesticides are found on the surface of fruits and vegetables, but others are easily absorbed into other parts of the plant and therefore cannot be washed away. Peeling the skin can help reduce the amount of pesticides entering the body.

In addition, choosing vegetables is also very important. According to experts, to choose clean vegetables, you need to pay attention to:

Do not choose vegetables that are too shiny or smooth on the outside, be wary of vegetables that are too “fat” or “plump”. Choose vegetables that are intact, without bruises, scratches, or bruises at the stem end.

You should choose fresh vegetables with normal, natural colors. In particular, you should not choose vegetables that are unusually green and green out of season, because these vegetables are easily fertilized with growth hormones.

When holding vegetables, they should feel heavy and crunchy. Pay attention to the “lightness” of some green vegetables that have been sprayed with too many growth stimulants and pesticides. Pay attention, many fruits and vegetables still have pesticides (spots or white spots) on the leaves, leaf stalks, fruit buds, fruit stalks... Do not choose vegetables with strange smells (pungent smell of pesticides).

When choosing fruit, also note that some types of fruit are soaked in toxic preservatives. They still look fresh and beautiful on the outside, but the stem is dark and mushy. When cut open or peeled, there is discoloration between the skin and the fruit flesh.

To be safe, you should buy vegetables and fruits at a store with a reliable address, not at places with unknown origins. If you buy vegetables at stores that are certified to sell safe vegetables, the vegetables are usually packaged and clearly labeled with their origin.

Before cooking, wash vegetables with clean water. It is best to wash vegetables, tubers and fruits under running water.
