Death penalty for killer of GrabBike driver
Murdering a GrabBike driver and stealing his motorbike and phone, Nguyen Van Ho (22 years old) was sentenced to death by the People's Court for the crimes of Murder and Robbery on February 18.
The panel of judges determined that the defendant's actions caused particularly serious consequences, and he committed multiple crimes at the same time... so the highest sentence was applied.
According to the indictment, in 2015, Ho moved from his hometown in An Giang to Ho Chi Minh City, rented a room in Vinh Loc B commune (Binh Chanh district) to work as a construction worker, then worked at a restaurant with a salary of 3 million VND per month. Because he often took a motorbike taxi, he became acquainted with Mr. Hung, a GrabBike driver.

On the evening of December 3, 2018, Ho intended to rob Mr. Hung to get money to pay off his rent and spend. The next morning, he called Mr. Hung to pick him up for work. Near Rach Cau Suoi bridge in the deserted Vinh Loc B commune, Ho asked Mr. Hung to stop the car, pretended to call a friend, then pulled out a knife and threatened the driver.
Mr. Hung resisted, Ho stabbed him many times, causing his death. He took 2 phones, 100,000 VND and the victim's motorbike and ran back to his rented room.
Ho posted an ad online for selling his motorbike for 6 million VND and a phone for 2 million VND, leaving the other one for his own use. He used the money to redeem the motorbike he had previously pawned. About 3 months later, Ho was arrested while hiding in his hometown.
During the investigation, he also confessed that he had previously stolen a necklace, earrings... from his mother-in-law's house. However, the victim did not report or request criminal proceedings, so the authorities did not prosecute Ho for this act.
