Cleft lip and palate is a common congenital malformation of the maxillofacial region with a high rate of about 1/600 to 1/1000 in newborns. In children with cleft lip, in addition to affecting aesthetics, depending on the severity, it can also cause functional disorders: sucking, pronunciation, can affect the teething process, teeth grow in the wrong position or not grow.

Children with cleft palate often have difficulty eating, food goes up the nose, chokes, easily regurgitates and speaks with a lisp. In addition, children often suffer from ear, nose and throat diseases such as rhinopharyngitis, otitis media, tonsillitis, etc. Over time, this will affect the overall development and have a negative impact on the child's hearing. Children with hearing loss due to chronic otitis media also have difficulty in language development.

Therefore, children need to be treated early by surgery to create cleft lip and palate.
