(NAO) -For more than 30 years, the war has receded into memory... There was a soldier who returned victorious from an American-puppet prison. With a pair of wooden crutches, he worked diligently every day in a corner of the market...

I knew Dao Duy Tri through a comrade who was a former soldier of Regiment 27 (Soviet Nghe Tinh Regiment). People said that his wife, Le Thi Lien, was a wonderful woman, a brave woman, she devoted her youth to him, shouldering the responsibility of building a family, raising 3 children to adulthood. I went to Thai Hoa market, found the parking lot and saw a bustling scene of people and vehicles, Dao Duy Tri was struggling on wooden crutches to receive and return vehicles to customers. When he saw me, he smiled, a very kind smile...
...On the morning of January 5, 1970, Dao Duy Tri's unit, C3/D2/E27, attacked the high point 161 in Northern Quang Tri. During the attack, Dao Duy Tri was wounded in the leg and could not continue moving with the unit. His teammates temporarily bandaged him and hid him in a bush to continue attacking the enemy's stronghold. When they returned, they could not find Dao Duy Tri anymore. Later, they learned that while the unit was attacking forward, enemy helicopters landed troops behind and Dao Duy Tri was discovered and captured by the enemy and taken to Dong Ha.
Because he refused to reveal the unit's secrets to the enemy, Dao Duy Tri was tortured by the Americans and puppets to the point of disability. First, they cut off the flesh on his arms and legs. After healing the wound, they dislocated his left foot, then they amputated his right leg. After healing the leg wound, they amputated his left arm, pulled the tendons and completely atrophied his right arm until Dao Duy Tri was almost disabled. They imprisoned him in Tong Duy Tan prison and Non Nuoc camp (Da Nang). In 1972, they transferred him to Phu Quoc island. At that time (1972), the unit was sure that the enemy had killed Dao Duy Tri, so they sent a death notice to his locality and family. After the Paris Agreement was signed (1973), Dao Duy Tri was returned and welcomed back to his locality.
A former comrade of Dao Duy Tri, now journalist Le Ba Duong, recounted that: after Dao Duy Tri was captured by the enemy, his unit deployed all measures to prevent it, but through monitoring, there was no source of information, no unit or no garrison position of the Regiment that was exposed, proving that the enemy could not get any information from Dao Duy Tri. That is why after the day of his return, Dao Duy Tri was very proud and extremely happy because he lived in the trust of his comrades, teammates, family and hometown.
