Sleeping on your back is good for your cardiovascular system and musculoskeletal system, but it can lead to snoring; sleeping on your side can cause hip and back pain.

Lie on your back

According toVerywellhealth,The body lies on its back, legs are spread apart, arms are parallel to the body, or arms can be raised and placed on the stomach, behind the head, or extended to the sides.

According to scientists, this is the best sleeping position. In this position, the body breathes better, reducing pressure and joint pain. Straightening the feet helps reduce peripheral edema (swelling of the feet and ankles), lessening the impact of congestive heart failure. Additionally, it reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome.

However, for those with breathing difficulties, lying on their backs can worsen breathing problems, manifesting as loud snoring, nasal congestion, and airway obstruction. Health conditions that can result from snoring include insomnia, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth, frequent nighttime urination, teeth grinding, mood disorders, hearing loss, chronic sinusitis, and an increased risk of heart attack.

Lie on your left side

In this position, the body leans to the left, the left shoulder is under pressure, the left arm is underneath or slightly above, the legs are stacked on top of each other, slightly bent, and the knees are raised above the body.

Sleeping on your left side can help avoid the adverse effects of snoring. Pregnant women can place a pillow under their belly or between their knees to reduce pressure on the bladder and alleviate back pain.

However, in this position, the internal organs in the chest can shift, with the lungs pressing down on the heart. This increased pressure affects heart function, potentially leading to heart failure. Additionally, pressure on the nerves in the left arm or leg can cause shoulder and lower back problems due to changes in spinal curvature.

Lie on your right side

Similar to lying on your left side, lying on your right side avoids the adverse effects of snoring. However, the internal organs shift to the right, the heart moves from the mediastinum towards the right lung, reducing lung volume, affecting blood oxygen levels, and putting strain on the cardiovascular system.

Additionally, pressure on the nerves of the right arm or leg can lead to compression injuries or nerve pain. Thus, frequently sleeping on your left or right side can cause lower back pain, hip pain, and heart and lung problems.

Lie face down

This is a less common sleeping position. The entire body lies face down on the bed, face turned to one side to breathe, arms and hands extended outwards, legs straight, not bent.

This posture avoids the adverse effects of snoring, prevents changes in the organs of the chest, and reduces chronic pain in the musculoskeletal system. However, this posture can lead to neck pain, increased pressure on the shoulder and upper back muscles, and pressure on the nerves in the hands. Additionally, breathing may be impaired.

Lying slightly upright

In this position, the head is elevated 20-30% of the body, similar to sleeping in an armchair. This position reduces the risk of snoring and sleep apnea-related problems. However, it is almost impossible to change position while sleeping, making it difficult to fall into a deep sleep.

According to scientists, when considering the best sleeping position, it's important to understand your body. Sleep disorders can stem from your own sleeping position. Therefore, experiment with different positions to find out which one works best for you.
