Consulting on bone and joint diseases

February 12, 2014 16:40

From February 11 to February 24, leading experts in the field of musculoskeletal system will advise readers on how to prevent and treat joint diseases.

The rate of joint diseases is increasing and getting younger. In addition to the cause of aging, other factors such as work, physical labor, nutrition, living habits (lack of exercise or excessive exercise, exercise posture, even inappropriate rest...) also damage cartilage and cause joint diseases.

In particular, the change in weather such as hot and cold, sometimes dry, sometimes wet like today has caused the number of people with joint disease to increase. Moreover, the habit of being lazy to exercise, eating a lot, and the "after-effects" from holidays and Tet contribute to making the disease worse.

If not treated promptly, the patient may suffer from degenerative cartilage complications that deform the joint and surrounding tissue, thereby causing loss of joint function. After 10 years of illness, about 10-15% of patients become disabled and cannot function independently.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Le Anh Thu, Vice President of the Vietnam Rheumatology Association, incomplete statistics show that in Vietnam, up to 30% of people over 35 years old, 60% of people over 65 years old and 85% of people over 80 years old suffer from osteoarthritis. Currently, it is not uncommon for young patients to have joint replacements with an average cost of 100 million VND per joint. After 10-15 years of use, artificial joints need to be replaced with new ones at double the cost. Joints that can be replaced to save patients from disability can only be performed in some places such as the knee, femoral head, fingers...

As one of the leading causes of disability in humans, osteoarthritis often begins with less serious symptoms such as intermittent pain in one or more joints, temporary limitation of movement or transient stiffness in the morning... Therefore, prevention, timely examination and consultation to detect and treat joint diseases early are essential.

To help readers better understand joints and joint-related diseases, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan - Vice President of the Vietnam Rheumatology Association; Associate Professor, Dr. Le Anh Thu - Vice President of the Vietnam Rheumatology Association; Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Vinh Ngoc - Vice President of the Hanoi Rheumatology Association and MSc.
