This year's Vietnam Sea and Islands Week was held in Ha Tinh on a national scale, with many important events such as: The 5th Vietnam Sea Brand Forum with the theme "Marine Conservation Areas with Sustainable Development of Marine and Island Environmental Resources"; The 4th Vietnam Sea Economic Forum; Rally to celebrate World Oceans Day and Vietnam Sea and Islands Week 2013.
Speaking at a press conference held on May 8 in Hanoi, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Administration of Seas and Islands Nguyen Dang Dao said: “This year’s Sea and Islands Week is an opportunity to promote and introduce potential, promote achievements, experiences and seek opportunities for marine and island economic development of localities across the country.”
“Vietnam Sea and Islands Week 2013 is identified as an important event that not only has profound and national significance but also international significance. Therefore, ministries, branches and provincial People’s Committees need to call on people to join hands to act for the homeland’s sea and islands,” Mr. Dao emphasized.
According to Mr. Dao, the implementation of the 2013 Sea and Islands Week is an opportunity to continue promoting propaganda work in both breadth and depth about the role, position, and importance of the sea, islands, and oceans. From there, creating a change in the awareness and actions of all levels, sectors, and people about the awareness of protecting marine resources and environment, protecting national sovereignty at sea in the current integration trend.
Vietnam has a coastline of over 3,260km and a large sea area (the exclusive economic zone area is about 1 million km2) three times larger than the mainland area, with more than 3,000 large and small islands, two archipelagos of Hoang Sa and Truong Sa, and rich and diverse natural resources.
Accordingly, the Vietnam Marine Strategy to 2020 has determined the goal of turning our country into a strong maritime nation, getting rich from the sea and striving for the marine economy to contribute 53-55% of GDP, 55-60% of the country's export turnover by 2020; effectively solving the country's social security issues./.
