The two Leaders reaffirmed the importance of the early conclusion of negotiations on the Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Vietnam, as a key instrument to further deepen the bilateral comprehensive partnership and enhance the existing excellent trade and investment relations on a mutually beneficial basis.
The EU and Vietnam aim to build this Free Trade Agreement into a modern, comprehensive and balanced Agreement that will help both economies address current and future challenges, and serve as an important platform for strengthening relations between Europe and Southeast Asia.
The two Leaders reviewed and welcomed the good progress and large volume of agreements reached in all areas of negotiations and agreed on the direction to resolve remaining issues with the aim of concluding negotiations in the coming months.
After discussing the possibilities of the final negotiation phase, the two Leaders agreed on the need to achieve a balanced and ambitious outcome in all areas related to market access (trade in goods, trade in services, investment flows, government procurement) as well as regulations and laws (including protection of intellectual property rights, geographical indications of both sides, state-owned enterprises, domestic law, investment protection, export taxes, export restrictions, etc. and other areas).
The two leaders emphasized that the completion of the FTA will help Vietnam, as a market economy, successfully integrate into the world economy.
With this goal in mind, the two Leaders directed the two negotiating delegations to make every effort to complete the negotiations in the spirit agreed upon here, under the leadership and direction of the EU Trade Commissioner and the Minister of Industry and Trade of Vietnam, with the aim of concluding the negotiations in the next few months.
