After losing 0-5 to North Korea in their opening match, the Vietnamese women's team defeated Hong Kong 5-0 in the remaining match of the group stage and came from behind to beat Thailand 2-1 in the quarter-finals to reach the semi-finals of the Asian Games for the first time.Unable to create a surprise against the reigning world champion Japan (lost 0-3 in the semi-finals) and the host Korea (lost 0-3 in the third-place match), the efforts of coach Mai Duc Chung and his team were still recognized.
At ASIAD 17, VFF signed two decisions to reward the women's team with a total of one billion and 20 million VND (800 million after winning against Thailand and 220 million despite losing to Japan).
Up to now, the tournament that the Vietnamese women's team received the biggest bonus was the 27th SEA Games. Despite losing to Thailand in the final, the team was still awarded 2.7 billion VND after the VFF transferred the bonus money from the U23 Vietnam team - which was eliminated in the group stage.
