1. France

In France, students must take a single exam to graduate from high school and apply for university, called the Baccalaureate. Students must achieve a minimum score of 10/20 (average of all subjects); if they only score 8-9/20, they must retake the exam or take an oral exam later. If they score less than 8/20, they must repeat the course.

The baccalaureate exam is divided into 3 blocks and students choose one block to participate in. Block S (Science) requires candidates to have high level of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology. Block ES (Economics and Social Sciences) focuses on subjects about economics and society. Block L (Literature) emphasizes subjects such as French literature, Philosophy, History, Geography, Foreign languages.

The exam is primarily written and oral. Some science exams also include a laboratory component.

2. America

In the US, the standardized test (SAT) is one of the entrance exams of many universities in the US. Since March 2016, the SAT has changed its format, consisting of 3 parts: Reading and Writing; Math; Essay. Reading (65 minutes) and Writing (35 minutes) assess the test taker's ability to use words and reason. All questions are in multiple choice format.

The Math test (80 minutes) is divided into two parts, a calculator section and a non-calculator section. Most of the questions are multiple choice, but there are some fill-in-the-blank questions. The test is based on real-life situations and requires students to use math formulas to solve problems.

The Essay is optional and is similar to the essays you write when applying to college. Although it is not a required test, some schools still require students to take it.

3. Sweden

The SWEET is a standardized test for university admission. Since 2011, the test has been divided into two parts, numeracy and writing. There are a total of 160 questions, divided into four subtests, two of which are numeracy and two of which are writing.

The calculation section has 4 topics: Mathematics (24 questions), Quantitative comparison (20 questions), Charts and graphs (24 questions), Data analysis (12 questions). The writing section also has 4 topics: English reading comprehension, Swedish reading comprehension, Vocabulary and Sentence completion. Each topic has 20 questions.

4. South Korea

The College Admission Test (CSAT), introduced in 1994, is a standardized test accepted by universities in Korea. The test used to have only five subjects, but since 2016, candidates have had to take the History test.

The Literature, Mathematics and English exams are scored on a 100-point scale, with the English exam including a listening section. In addition to English, students must take another foreign language exam, usually Chinese, on a 50-point scale.

The 50-point history test has recently become mandatory in the country. The final exam is a choice of subjects from Social Sciences, Science and Vocational Education.

5. China

The National College Entrance Examination (NCEE) is held annually and is considered a mandatory requirement for admission to most universities in China. The format of the NCEE is also known as “3+X”, meaning that candidates must take 3 compulsory tests (Chinese, Mathematics and Foreign Language) with a score of 150 each and X optional tests in Social Sciences (Political Science, History, Geography), or Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry and Biology) accounting for 300/750 total points.

6. Japan

The results of the national university entrance exam, which takes place over two days in mid-January every year, are accepted by public universities and some private universities. There are 29 tests in 6 subjects (Math, Science, Japanese Literature, Foreign Language, Civics, Geography - History).

Applicants will only take the tests required by the universities they are applying to. The questions are multiple choice and follow the guidelines of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan.

7. Russian Federation

Previously, Russia had many exams that students had to pass to graduate from high school and enter university. But since 2009, Russia has combined the exams into one. Candidates are required to take Russian and Mathematics. In addition, they can choose to take additional exams in Foreign Languages, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Literature, History, etc. according to their personal wishes or the special requirements of each school.

Each test has two parts. Part 1 consists of short answer questions. Part 2 may have just one or a few questions that require the candidate to use their creativity.

8. Canada

In Canada, there is no general university entrance exam, only a selection process. Each university will have different admission standards and consider applications on a case-by-case basis.

9. Australia

There are also virtually no university entrance exams in Australia. Students are admitted to universities or vocational colleges based on their high school results or through the STAT test which includes multiple choice tests in Mathematics, Science, Social Science and an English essay.

10. India

In India, university admissions are a bit complicated. High school seniors in India have to take two exams: the High School Graduation Exam and the University Admissions Exam. The graduation exam scores and the university entrance exam scores are the basis for universities to select students. However, each locality and each university has different grading methods, grading scales and benchmarks.

11. Norway

Another country that does not have a university entrance exam is Norway. A student’s high school performance, bonus points for special studies, and military service are all factors that are considered in the university admissions process. 12. Ireland
