USD exchange rate today in the world
In the US market, the US Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the fluctuations of the US dollar against 6 major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), fell 0.47% to 106.22. The dollar continued to decline from the end of last week, while the euro increased 0.54% to 1.0598 USD.
Last week, the DXY index hit a more than one-year high of 107.07, on expectations that a Donald Trump victory could lead to higher tariffs and boost inflation, thereby slowing the pace of interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve (Fed).
In contrast, the dollar gained against the Japanese yen in recent trading, continuing its rally after the Bank of Japan (BoJ) said it would continue to tighten monetary policy. However, it has not yet determined the timing of an interest rate hike.
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda said the economy was moving toward sustainable inflation thanks to rising wages and warned against keeping interest rates too low. He also left open the possibility of a rate hike as early as next month, but did not specify whether it would be in December.
Marc Chandler, strategist at Bannockburn Global Forex in New York, said the market was waiting for a clearer move from the BoJ on interest rates. Governor Ueda gave no indication of the timing of a rate hike, further weakening the yen. The BoJ unexpectedly raised short-term interest rates in July.
The US dollar is currently at 154.6 yen, up 0.17%. The dollar ended a four-session winning streak against the yen late last week after Japan's finance minister warned that the government would intervene in the currency market if necessary.
The market now rates a 54% chance that the BoJ will raise interest rates by 25 basis points at its meeting on December 19, unchanged from before Mr. Ueda's speech.
Meanwhile, two top European Central Bank officials expressed concern about the negative impact of new US tariffs on eurozone economic growth. Fed officials, including Chairman Jerome Powell, also made comments suggesting they were reconsidering the path of interest rate cuts.
A new report shows the National Association of Home Builders' Housing Market Index rose to 46 this month, its highest level since April, thanks to optimism about policy changes following the recent US presidential election.
The pound was last up 0.47% in the last trading session at $1.2674, after falling 2.4% last week, its biggest drop since early February 2023.
