The USD/JPY exchange rate plummeted to 146.33. The main reason was the US dollar's sharp weakening after the US consumer price index (CPI) data for April was released lower than expected.
The DXY index, which measures the greenback's strength against six major currencies, continued to fall from a monthly high of 102 to around 100.50. Data showed that the US CPI increased by just 2.3%, marking the lowest level since February 2021.
Chicago Federal Reserve Bank President Austan Goolsbee said that low inflation and a new trade deal between the US and China will create conditions for the Fed to cut interest rates in the near future. However, the market is still leaning towards the possibility that the Fed will keep interest rates in the range of 4.25% - 4.50% at the July meeting.
The probability of the Fed keeping interest rates unchanged in July has fallen slightly to 63.3%, compared with 65.1% the previous day, according to the CME FedWatch forecasting tool.
In contrast to the US dollar, the Japanese yen has been showing strength in the global market. Expectations that the Bank of Japan (BoJ) may soon raise interest rates have supported the JPY's appreciation.
BoJ Deputy Governor Shinichi Uchida also expressed confidence in the trend of sustainable wage growth and inflation, despite the global economy still being affected by US tax policy.
