The unemployment rate of students is increasing: Due to too big an ego!

April 28, 2015 20:04

The Ministry of Education and Training has just released figures showing that up to 40% of university graduates cannot find jobs within 3 months of graduating. This is something that many businesses believe reflects the true capacity of today's students.

Passive and lazy

Ms. Luu Thi Dao, Head of Human Resources Administration Department of Tue Linh Company Limited, said that as a company specializing in the production and processing of medicinal materials, the company's recruitment criteria are also somewhat different.

Accordingly, on average, the company needs to recruit about 20 people per month, equivalent to about 240-300 workers per year. Especially in November 2014 alone, due to expanding the market and expanding products, the company needs to recruit more than 100 workers.

Many students remain passive

“Due to the nature of the company’s production and business, we require 98% of candidates to have a profession, while unskilled workers only account for 2%. Although there are many applications each time we post a recruitment notice, the success rate is only about 32%. The number of recruits who meet the job requirements after the probationary period is only about 60%,” said Ms. Dao.

According to Ms. Dao, during the recruitment process, she found that candidates often lacked appropriate specialized knowledge and soft skills, making it difficult to express themselves (language skills, presentation, and mannerisms, showing a lack of confidence).

“Meanwhile, when we asked interview questions to learn more about candidates such as: What do you expect from the job, Why did you apply? … more than half of them could not clearly express their chosen goals,” Ms. Dao emphasized.

According to Ms. Dao, the reason for this situation is that new graduates are too passive and lazy, do not thoroughly research what they need to do for work, and are lazy to learn about the company before attending the interview.

While the knowledge in school does not meet the requirements of employers, students themselves do not supplement their own knowledge. Obviously, all universities have foreign language centers, and all have courses on soft skills such as interview skills, teamwork skills, coping skills, etc. However, in the recruitment process, according to Ms. Dao's assessment, students are really weak and lack these things.

Explaining the underlying cause of students being passive and lazy when not equipping themselves with soft skills, according to Ms. Dao, is that their own lives are better, their parents provide enough for them to go to school, so they no longer have the aspiration to excel like before. They consider university as a time to "relax" after months of hard exam preparation, so they allow themselves to be lazy.

Not a worker yet but want to be a teacher

With the characteristics of a construction company, recruitment needs always fluctuate according to the progress of the projects, but according to Mr. Tran Chung - Head of Human Resources Department (Lac Hong Investment Joint Stock Company), currently, new graduates are very weak and lack life skills, teamwork skills and professional qualifications.

Based on the company's recruitment needs, Mr. Chung said that there are positions where it is difficult to find a candidate who can meet the job requirements. For example, the position of labor protection engineer. This is a position where, after being recruited, engineers will work on the construction site. They must demonstrate the ability to gather and connect groups of workers and technicians to proactively disseminate and equip knowledge about labor protection, not just handle each specific case of labor safety violations. However, most new graduates cannot do this.

“Meanwhile, the ego of new graduates is too big. They have not yet become workers but they want to “become teachers” while their predecessors and colleagues do not have the spirit of guidance. The students themselves do not show that they have the need to learn but always act like they know everything and do not need to learn anymore,” said Mr. Chung.

Mr. Chung also gave an example, with the position of electrician, the company is always short of staff. However, the young team just graduated, in addition to poor training quality, they are not really enthusiastic about the job. They do not know where their weaknesses are, nor do they have the spirit to learn.

“If the power company asked him to lay wires, he would definitely not be satisfied. They would think that because he had been properly educated, he should be a leader. If he did not meet that requirement, he would be ready to quit his job.

Obviously, the key problem here is that they lack the spirit to strive, they lack responsibility for the assigned work (even the smallest task of laying electric wires), they lack enthusiasm and love for the work they have learned even though the learning is not always complete" - Mr. Chung emphasized.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training in 2011, the total number of university and college graduates was 318,400; in 2012 it was 402,300; in 2013 it was 425,200.

During the period 2011 - 2014, the number of university and college graduates with jobs increased over the years. Comparing 2014 with 2010, the rate of university and college graduates with jobs increased by 38%.

However, the number of unemployed university and college graduates of working age in recent times has increased more than the number of graduates and employed workers; the number of unemployed university and college graduates in 2014 compared to 2010 increased by 103%.

Based on reports from more than 100 universities, colleges, and vocational schools, in the period 2010 - 2014, the average rate of graduates finding jobs after 3 months of graduation was about 60%. Some educational institutions had a higher rate, about 80 - 90%.
