In response to China's placement of the Haiyang Shiyou 981 oil rig in Vietnam's exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, along with many escort ships, including military ships and aircraft, on May 12, the Vietnam Committee for Solidarity and Cooperation in Asia, Africa and Latin America issued a statement condemning China for these wrongdoings.

The statement stated that the Vietnam Committee for Solidarity and Cooperation in Asia, Africa and Latin America is extremely concerned and resolutely opposes the fact that on May 2, 2014, China brought the Haiyang Shiyou 981 drilling rig into the waters of Vietnam's exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, along with many escort ships, including military ships and aircraft.

China's actions seriously violate Vietnam's sovereignty and jurisdiction over Vietnam's exclusive economic zones and continental shelf, and go against international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) between China and ASEAN in 2002.

These actions also go against the agreements between the two countries' senior leaders, the solidarity and cooperation that the people and people's organizations of the two countries have built together over the years, increasing complexity and tension, threatening the environment of peace, stability and cooperation in the region.

The Vietnam Committee for Solidarity and Cooperation in Asia, Africa and Latin America requests that China promptly withdraw all drilling rigs and escort forces from Vietnam's exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, and prevent similar actions from occurring in the future.

The Vietnam Committee for Solidarity and Cooperation in Asia, Africa and Latin America calls on peace-loving organizations, forces and people of Asian, African and Latin American countries and around the world to speak out and demand that China end unilateral actions that threaten peace, stability and security in the region, and respect international law and Vietnam's legitimate sovereignty./.
