The Ukrainian military said that the separatists fired several rockets at the eastern suburbs of Mariupol and destroyed many houses in the area. Mariupol is a strategic port in the eastern region between Russia and the Crimean peninsula and is also one of the areas still under the control of the Kiev government. The Ukrainian military accused "the separatists do not want peace, they are conducting operations under the direction of the Kremlin to escalate the fighting situation in Donetsk".
On Thursday, the Ukrainian army had to withdraw and admit defeat in the area of Donetsk airport, the scene of some of the bloodiest battles since the conflict in eastern Ukraine began. In the face of the escalating fighting in eastern Ukraine, Ms. Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, affirmed that "This escalation will certainly cause a serious deterioration in relations between the European Union and Russia".
It seems that the war situation in eastern Ukraine in the coming days will take a not very positive direction. Especially when on Friday, Mr. Alexander Zakharchenko announced that he would not participate in any ceasefire agreement with the Kiev government and would launch an attack across the entire region. The United Nations said that since April 2014, nearly 5,000 people have been killed in the fighting between the Ukrainian army and separatist forces in the east of the country.
