Former Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Igor Romanenko, accused German Chancellor Angela Merkel of sabotaging Kiev's plans to join NATO.

According to him, the use of the collective security mechanism for Kiev is problematic. At the same time, Mr. Romanenko noted that the prospects for Ukraine's accession to NATO could have been different without the policy of the German leadership.

"We will try, but with a different approach. We had the biggest chance to join in 2008, but President Putin made a deal with Mrs. Merkel and did everything so that neither Ukraine nor Georgia could become a member of NATO, unfortunately," Romanenko told ZIK TV channel.

Experts believe that Kiev will not be able to join this alliance for the next 20 years.
