Ukraine asks US to set up military base near Crimea
(Baonghean.vn) - Ukrainian authorities are discussing with US representatives about deploying US military bases in eastern Ukraine or areas near the Crimean Peninsula.

"On the political front, we are talking about dialogue with the United States. In particular, we will discuss Ukraine's legal accession to NATO. Because, one thing is certain, we cannot guarantee security in relations with Russia," said Ivan Vinnik, deputy of the Supreme Council of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
According to MP Vinnik, the location of the military base is determined to ensure national defense in case of unusual military developments in the country. Therefore, the majority of authorities believe that the US military base should be located on the eastern border of Ukraine, or in the regions of Ukraine adjacent to the Crimean Peninsula. "Military facilities should be located in these key territories," MP Vinnik emphasized.
The move comes amid escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, following a clash between naval vessels from both sides in the Kerch Strait.
Expressing support for Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, the US administration condemned Russia's actions in the Kerch Strait and urged European allies to tighten sanctions against Russia.
