“Since the uncontrolled presence of UAVs in the sky over the capital could lead to undesirable consequences, we decided to deploy mobile (missile) teams. Unfortunately, due to a technical malfunction, this happened,” Ukrainian media quoted a statement from the Ukrainian military.
The announcement came hours after a video went viral on social media showing the UAV bursting into flames over Kiev after being shot down by a shoulder-fired missile. Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said the UAV crashed in the Pechersky district, but no one was injured.
Some people thought that this UAV was a Russian “Corsair”. However, some local media later reported otherwise and the Ukrainian military admitted it.
The Bayraktar TB2 is a UAV manufactured by Türkiye's Baykar Makina and was widely used in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in 2020. Ukraine later ordered the UAV. However, they quickly fell prey to Russian air defenses and were barely seen on the front lines.
