UNDP supports 1.7 million USD to develop Vietnam statistics

On November 19, in Hanoi, the General Statistics Office (Ministry of Planning and Investment) in coordination with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) launched the project "Supporting the implementation of Vietnam's Statistical Development Strategy for the 2011-2020 period, with a vision to 2030".

The project will be implemented from 2012 to 2016 with a total estimated capital of about 3 million USD. Of this, UNDP will support about 1.7 million USD; the counterpart capital of the Vietnamese Government will be 6.2 billion VND, equivalent to 300,000 USD.

Mr. Nguyen The Phuong, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, said that the project's orientation is to closely follow the Government's priorities set out in the Statistical Development Strategy and action programs to support.

Therefore, the project results will directly contribute to the implementation of the statistical development strategy to build a solid foundation for the statistics sector for many years to come.

Ms. Tran Thi Hang, Deputy Director General of the General Statistics Office and Project Director, said that the overall objective of the project is to support the General Statistics Office and relevant agencies of Vietnam in implementing the Vietnam Statistical Development Strategy for the period 2011-2020 and vision to 2030 to ensure that by 2016, key central agencies will develop and monitor socio-economic development policies.

In particular, the project focuses on perfecting the statistical legal environment, coordination mechanisms of relevant entities in the Vietnamese statistical system, data dissemination, perfecting statistical methodologies and techniques, monitoring and evaluating the progress of implementing the Vietnam Statistical Development Strategy.

According to the General Statistics Office, the main activities of the project focus on a number of important activities to help the General Statistics Office implement the action programs of the Vietnam Statistical Development Strategy.

Specifically, the project will focus on four basic outputs: perfecting the statistical legal environment such as amending the 2003 Statistics Law and related documents; strengthening the capacity of the statistical system; perfecting and upgrading statistical methods to comply with international standards in all stages of collecting, processing, synthesizing and analyzing statistical data; and the final output is to ensure that the implementation of the Vietnam Statistical Development Strategy is closely coordinated between agencies in the statistical system and development partners and is systematically monitored and evaluated.

In addition, the project will provide technical support to help build a National Statistical Data Center at the General Statistics Office to collect, store, share and publish socio-economic statistical data, helping to form data warehouses to synthesize into a common National Statistical Data Warehouse for exploitation and use.

On the other hand, the project also builds and improves mechanisms and tools to connect and enhance two-way dialogue between producers and users of information through the Online Statistical Forum on the General Statistics Office's Electronic Information Portal to enhance the ability of data producers to meet the needs of users of information.

In addition, the project also provides technical support to upgrade the General Department's Electronic Information page, connect with local and national data warehouses, and connect with online statistical forums to become an effective information channel./.
